The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is a 110-metre-high concert hall located in the HafenCity district, built on the listed brick base of the former Kaispeicher A warehouse.

Architecture and Design

The design for the major project, construction of which began in April 2007, was created by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. The architects placed a modern, wave-shaped structure on top of the historic base, featuring a façade made up of around 1,100 individually shaped glass elements.

The structural concept separates the former warehouse from the new building by means of an intermediate viewing platform known as the Plaza. At the heart of the building is the Grand Hall, designed according to the vineyard principle and fitted with a bespoke gypsum-fibre surface known as the “White Skin” to ensure optimal acoustics.
